Owhanake

Designed by Dave Strachan at SGA, this house optimises the clients brief ‘to fit with the land’. The 350m2 house is widely featured in numerous magazines and publications. The clients’ passion about the land has resulted in an exquisitely designed and built home sitting on a superbly developed landscaped property on Waiheke Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. This is a truly sustainable house with a keen focus on the environment throughout the design and build.

The exterior of the house "comes in" with both the floating decks and the exterior weatherboards flowing from the exterior through to the interior hallways, bathrooms and pool room. A unique feature is the use of plywood on all other interior surfaces. Passive heating is generated through the trowel finished concrete floor complete with solar energised under floor heating. Another unique feature is the top mount pivot telescopic-stay window joinery that once open, again, allows the outside to come in.

This project is a total success. Emphasising an unparalleled balance of client brief, design, build and landscaping. A true credit to the entire specialist craftsman involved and a jewel on Waiheke Island.
